I saw the band ‘LAU’ tonight (whom, I confess, I’d never heard of) and was completely gobsmacked. They have taken a musical genre, in this case ‘traditional’ folk (except they write almost all of their own music) and taken it to a whole other level. It’s as if Brian Wilson, Igor Stravinsky, and Phillip Glass were asked to do the arrangements, but this is a fiddle, guitar and accordion for God’s sake, sounding like the Simon Bolivar Orchestra. It’s very rare that you hear music of this complexity, harmonic depth and virtuosity have this much power, but that’s what I heard at the Brudenell Club in Leeds tonight. Put your preconceptions to one side and catch them on tour, or buy their new album. ‘Ground-breaking’ is an over-used term, but this time it fits.
